Nada más para concluir, me quedo pensando en que estamos en un momento complicado en el mundo, en la región. Hay una tendencia ahora a ser impermeables a la diversidad. La diversidad ahora en nuestros contextos está teniendo un momento muy delicado. Estamos viendo con temor a los demás, tenemos un temor fuerte a la alteridad. Me parece que la categoría de origen étnico-nacional tiene un peso importante en este temor, en esta suspicacia hacia el otro.
Creo que en la región, Uruguay puede estar también en este lado de abrazar la diversidad y meterla en el centro, porque esa es una disyuntiva de nuestros días. A la sociedad civil, a los Estados, a la Comisión Interamericana nos toca tener esta disyuntiva: ¿conducimos lo diverso hacia lo marginal desde una posición hegemónica excluyente, o abrazamos la diversidad y la traemos al centro? La diversidad en todos los sentidos, origen étnico y nacional, es muy importante también.

With nothing else to conclude, I find myself thinking about the fact that we are in a complicated moment in the world, in the region. There is a current trend to take a hard line against diversity. Diversity now, in our contexts, is in a very delicate position. We are looking with fear towards others, we have a strong fear of difference. And it seems to me that the category of ethnic-national origin carries significant weight in this fear, in this suspicion of the other.
I believe that in the region, Uruguay can be on the side of embracing diversity and putting it in the center of its affairs, because that is a dilemma of our days. To civil society, to the State, to the Inter-American Commission, it is up to us to solve this dilemma: do we drive those who bring diversity towards the margins from an exclusionary hegemonic position, or do we embrace diversity and bring it to the center? Diversity in all senses, ethnic and national origin, is very important.
